Craft Ideas From The Stories

Little Lantern Bookmark

15 minutes

You will need

  • Card or thick paper
  • Yellow tissue paper
  • Glue stick
  • Ribbon

Steps

  1. Cut a tall lantern shape from card, about the height of your hand.
  2. Cut a small window in the middle and glue tissue paper behind it.
  3. Punch a hole at the top and thread the ribbon through.
  4. Write the title of the book you are reading on the back.

Story Stick Puppets

25 minutes

You will need

  • Paper
  • Crayons
  • Lolly sticks
  • Tape

Steps

  1. Draw the three characters you liked most and color them in.
  2. Cut them out and tape each one to a stick.
  3. Fold a shoebox open to make your stage.
  4. Retell the story to a grown up, using your own voice for each character.

Paper Boat Page Sea

20 minutes

You will need

  • Blue paper
  • Old newspaper
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Steps

  1. Fold a small paper boat from newspaper.
  2. Cut wavy strips from the blue paper for the sea.
  3. Glue the waves in layers and tuck the boat between them.
  4. Add a tiny lighthouse with a paper flame on top.

Reading Den Sign

10 minutes

You will need

  • Card
  • Markers
  • Stickers
  • String

Steps

  1. Write 'Quiet please, story in progress' on the card.
  2. Decorate the border with stars and stickers.
  3. Tie string to both corners.
  4. Hang it wherever you read the most.

Dragon Book Guardian

30 minutes

You will need

  • Egg carton
  • Green paint
  • Googly eyes
  • Felt scraps

Steps

  1. Cut a strip of four egg cups for the body.
  2. Paint it and let it dry while you read a chapter.
  3. Glue on eyes and a felt tail and wings.
  4. Sit it on the shelf to guard your favourite books.

Word Jar

Ongoing

You will need

  • A clean jar
  • Paper slips
  • A pen

Steps

  1. Every time you meet a beautiful new word, write it on a slip.
  2. Fold it and drop it into the jar.
  3. On Sundays, pull out three words.
  4. Make one silly sentence using all three.
